Rogers Announces Two New Smartphones

banner02_9100b2rr Rogers has two new smartphones for Canadians; the Blackberry Pearl 9100 and the Acer Liquid E.

The Blackberry Pearl 9100, like other Pearl phones has a compact qwerty keyboard and really looks fantastic!  While most Pearls seem to have been aimed at consumers the 9100 looks all business-like in it’s black suit.

The 9100 specs include a 2.2 inch, 360 x 400 TFT display, a trackpad and a 3 megapixel camera.  The OS seems to be very similar to the BB Bold, but I really don’t know much about Blackberry. ;)

The other new phone is Acer Liquid E, a slate style phone running Android 2.1.  The E also includes a QualComm Snapdragon processor, 3.5” touch screen, and 5 megapixel camera.  We are hoping to get a review unit soon and will let you know more about this phone.

Both phones are $49.99 with a three year agreement and a minimum $45 per month plan, which is pretty decent pricing for new entrants in Canada.

That Acer E looks pretty nice. It’s listed at $425 without a contract, so it’s not a bad price at all. Especially when you consider it’s a 480×600 WVGA screen with 7.2MBps HSPA download speed!

The screen doesn’t compare to the HD2, but it would be nice to have an Android device running on the North American 3G network.

Ok, this is really becoming unfair. First there was the Experia X10, then the rumors of the Desire, now the Liquid E. All available in Canada, and sent to entice me away from Windows Mobile. I’m becoming so weak. Maybe I should start doing reviews again, just to rationalize my fall from the wagon.

Dave, if you felt the need to document this monumental fall…I know just where you could do that. :)

@Dave – ya, Telus has been pushing out new phones pretty hard the last couple years. If you look at it, they released a number of phones before they were released elsewhere. Rogers hasn’t been too fast at doing much of anything when it comes to phone releases – heck, they released the G1 a year ago and still consider it a current device! Anyway, it was nice to see them move quickly with the X10 and the talk on the street is that they’ll be releasing the X10 mini as well.

Perhaps the tides have changed and Canada is finally the place for hot new devices!! :)

Yeah I agree Mike. Telus in particular have been rather progressive. I did a review of the P4000 (Mogal) when it first hit. It was the first real world pictures of the phone for several weeks till Sprint released it. They have kept it up prety well since then, which makes it easy for me to believe they will release the Desire soon.

You are right about Rogers as well. Everything seems to be second fiddle to Blackberry.

We will have to see where WP7 will fit into all this as Android continues to gain a stronger presence. I’m sure Telus and Bell will give it a try, but I doubt Rogers will. For the past 2-3 years if you ask a Rogers rep about Windows Mobile they will tell you that they quit making them……

    Daz, check your email.
