HTC has taken the wrap off it’s latest smartphone named Rhyme. The Android powered phone was reviled today at an event in San Francisco along with Verizon Wireless. With the Rhyme, HTC has taken a new approach, taking their traditional smartphone and adding stylish and colorful accessories like a wired headset, docking station, bluetooth earpiece and an interesting charm. As a result, the phone isn’t the powerhouse that we’ve come to expect with each new handset release. It offers a 1GHz processor – single core, total storage of 4GB with additional memory available by MicroSD slot, Quad-band GSM and HSPA upload speeds up to 5.76 Mbps and download speeds up to 14.4 Mbps, and a 3.7 inch screen. The camera is a 5 megapixel camera and supports 720p recording of HD videos, along with a VGA front facing camera. A 1600mAh battery, G-Sensor, digital compass, proximity and ambient light sensor, DLNA, and WiFi B/G/N. HTC has also included the latest version of their Sense UI automatically customizing the home screen based on the applications you’ve run and the people you’ve talked with.

The dock provides an easy way to charge your device, simnply drop it in the dock at the end of the day and it will charge over night. The dock also doubles as an alarm clock and media center. The wired headset and bluetooth earpiece are colored to match your device – which is available in the 3 colors shown above.

The HTC Charm is an interesting accessory. It’s also colored to match the device, and plugs into the headset jack of the device. Then when your phone rings or a new text message arrives, the charm will flash. It’s a great solution to help people keep an eye on their device without keeping it in their hand all the time. The downside of this, it doesn’t actually integrate with the Android OS on the phone. So there’s no way to create an app that would flash the charm to alert you to other things that might be going on around you. For example, FourSquare users might want the charm to flash when a friend checks into the same location. There’s a lot of different options on how this could be leveraged to create a deeper experience.

The Rhyme looks to be an affordable phone with a stylish appeal. It’s exclusive on the Verizon network and goes on sale September 29th for $199. Check out HTC’s website for more details and video’s of the Rhyme.

AT&T has announced that they will be carrying 3 new Windows Phone devices and are expecting them to be available this fall, but failed to provide any solid dates on when customers could expect to buy the new devices. AT&T will bring an updated version of the Samsung Focus called Focus S. This updated device will have the same size screen, but it will go from AMOLED to the newer and much more brilliant AMOLED Plus screen. It will also have a 1.4 GHz processor, 4G speeds, super thin profile at 8.55 mm, a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and a 8 megapixel rear camera.

The other 2 devices are not updates to existing devices – the first one is the HTC Titan that we reported about last week, and the other is the Samsung Focus Flash. The Flash name would indicate that this is either a super fast phone, or that it’s a top end camera phone. However, neither of those are the case for the Focus Flash. In this case, they are delivering a light weight, entry level phone. The Flash will have 3.7 inch Super AMOLED screen, a 1.4 GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera and a unmentioned resolution for the front facing camera. AT&T does mention that it will be light on the pocketbook but still have all the power of Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango).

The HTC Titan, as we’ve talked about before, will have a super large 4.7 inch screen, a 1.5 GHz processor, and a 8 megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash. While the press release stops here, a blog posting over on the Windows Phone team blog seems to indicate that there is some special and unique sauce coming on the AT&T version of the Titan. Brian Seitz writes “The AT&T version will be unique, but we’ll have to keep you in suspense for a while longer on what it looks like and final specs”. Speculation is that AT&T has increase the internal storage space to 32GB and/or included HTC’s new Dr Dre Beats offering with the device. Of course, it’s all speculation until we get word from HTC, AT&T, or Microsoft.

Let us know what you think of these new devices from AT&T. And what kind of special are you looing for on the HTC Titan device?

HTC kicked of September in style by showing off their hot new Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) smartphones – Radar and Titan. The two smartphones will be available starting in Europe and Asia and spreading globally in October 2011.

The Radar is an aluminum unibody design that HTC has been doing with the Legend and Flyer. It sports a 3.8 inch screen, weights 137 grams, 1GHz processor, 8GB internal storage, 5 megapixel camera with F2.2 lens and LED flash, VGA front camera, 720p video recording, and 3G up to 14.4 Mbps download and 5.76 Mbps upload speed.

The Titan is a step up from the Radar in almost every way, except weight. It comes in at 160 grams versus the 137 grams of the Radar. Otherwise, it’s thinner at 9.9mm, has a larger 4.7 inch screen, a more powerful 1.5 GHz processor, more internal memory with 16GB, an 8 megapixel camera with F2.2 lens and dual LED flash, a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, 720p video recording, and 3G up to 14.4 Mbps download and 5.76 Mbps upload speed.

The Titan is a larger and more powerful phone than the Radar, but sadly it still only has 16GB of storage. I don’t know why HTC decided not to up that to 32GB. That would make it a very attractive phone with a larger screen, fast processor, and loads of memory. Personally I like the Titan more than Radar, but I was really expecting to see second generation devices with more memory. Guess it’s up to Samsung to delivery larger memory now.

HTC and Beats by Dr. Dre team up to bring high performance sound to HTC phones. The two companies have been working together to create a superior mobile audio experience which appear in a line of HTC devices available later this fall. This is more than the average partnership, with HTC investing 300 million for a 51% share of Beats. The fact that HTC has decided to invest in Beats shows just how important this is for the future of HTC in the mobile space.

Audio quality is something that has been missing in the mobile space for a long time. With this partnership, HTC can turn the corner and quickly become the standard for mobile audio that all other manufacturers strive for. At this time there is no indication from HTC about what phones will have Beats integrated or what consumers can expect from a Beats enabled phone – other than awesome audio reproduction.

You can read the full press release on HTCs web site. So HTC, now that audio has been taken care of, time to start looking at the camera.

Bell has added the HTC Sensation to their device line-up. Priced at $550 without a contract or $150 with a 3 year contract, the Sensation is the latest and greatest Android powered smartphone from HTC. It features a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 768MB RAM, 1GB internal storage, a 4.3 inch super LCD screen, 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, 1080p HD video recording, and support for Bell’s fast HSPA+ network. That means you can expect to get somewhere in the area of 14.4 Mbps download. The Sensation will also support portable WiFi hotspot for up to 8 devices.

It’s a great phone and Bell isn’t done yet – we are still waiting for the Galaxy S II smartphone to become available. We expect that to launch in the very near future.

HTC has announced a small but critical change in direction. Until now, Android based phones from HTC have a locked bootloader. For the average person, this doesn’t really matter. However, for the hacking community (and that’s hacking in the good sense), this can make things very difficult. A locked bootloader will prevent you from mod’ing the software on the device. Going forward, HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou, has confirmed on the company’s Facebook page that they will no longer be locking the bootloader on devices.

“There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience,” Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

HTC’s Facebook post announcing this change is currently liked by 7,000+ people, and has 2,000+ comments – all of which praise the company for listening to the customer. There’s no question this small change has had a positive impact in the eye’s of many consumers. And they’ll tell two friends… and they’ll tell two friends…

Still not impressed? Ok, how about an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with a dual LED flash supporting full 1080p HD video recording with stereo sound, Bluetooth 3.0, and a 1520mAh battery. The only thing on the spec sheet that brings out the questions is the available memory. The device brags 4GB internal storage with only 1GB being user accessible. We’re not sure where the other 3GB went or why it’s being kept locked away from the user. But not to worry, you can still add an external MicroSD card for more storage – or use the 8GB one that comes with the phone.

When it does ship in the coming months, you’ll find the latest version of HTC’s Sense and it will also have HTC’s Watch application that allows multi-media rental and purchases from the device. It will also sport a newly redesigned lock screen that shows displays real time information from the device, including image gallery, social network friend stream, weather, and more.

Congrats to HTC on another amazing device. The HTC Sensation is truly a sensational device.

Do you Facebook? With over 200 million Facebook users, HTC is betting that some may be interested in a Facebook connected smartphone, and to satisfy that need, they have released 2 devices with a dedicated Facebook button for quick and easy access. The first device – called “HTC Cha Cha”, is typical messenger style device with a physical keyboard below the screen. The second device – called “HTC Salsa”, is your typical touch screen device, very similar to the HTC Legend in styling.

Both phones are running Android with HTC Sense with a 5 megapixel camera, 512MB RAM / 512MB ROM, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/Edge, Dual-Band HSPA+, Bluetooth, Wifi, A2DP for wireless stereo headsets, MicroSD, and 600 MHz processors. In fact, besides the obvious screen size and physical keyboard, the only other difference is the battery size. The Salsa has a slightly larger battery at 1500 mAh, versus the Cha Cha at 1250 mAh.

I’ve always been a big fan of the messenger style of device, I like that physical keyboard for getting through tasks quickly. So, I’m naturally drawn to the Cha Cha, but at the same time, I would love to see a larger screen on that device, and I’m not sure if I need a dedicated Facebook button. What’s wrong with placing a shortcut on the desktop that allows you to launch your favorite app quickly? I’m sure that adding a Facebook button will be a draw for some. However, I’m more likely to by this for the form factor alone.

And if you’re a Facebook user, don’t forget to Like us – http://www.facebook.com/MobileJaw

HTC pulled the cover off their all new tablet – the HTC Flyer featuring HTC’s Sense today at Mobile World Congress. HTC is yet another company adding an Android based tablet to their device line up. However, the Flyer brings HTC’s special sauce to the table – The Sense UI. They’ve also added a special stylus for use with their Scribe software enabling you to quickly take notes on the tablet.

The Flyer is very similar to the Legend in that they both are encased in a aluminum housing. In fact, the Flyer looks like a large Legend from the back. With a 4000 mAh battery and a 7-inch screen, the Flyer weights in at 415 grams. In comparison, the iPad (with WiFi and 3G) weights in at 730 grams, and the Samsung Tab weights in at 380 grams. So the Flyer is pretty much in line with what you would expect from the 7 inch tablet space.

The Flyer also sports a powerful 1.5 GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon processor, 3.5mm headset jack, 5 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, MicroUSB, MicroSD, and 16/32GB of internal storage. It’s going to ship with Android 2.4, but will be upgradeable shortly after to Android 3.0 – Honeycomb.

And if word on the street is to be believed, it’s coming to Telus in Canada in early Q2. In the ever expanding tablet market, HTC may have a winner, if the price is right.

The full press release is below, along with a couple more pictures.

HTC Unveils HTC FLYER™, The First Tablet With HTC SENSE™

Aluminum unibody design with touch and pen interaction make HTC Flyer unique

First tablet with HTC Watch™ video service, HTC Scribe™ Technology
and OnLive® cloud gaming

BARCELONA, SPAIN – Mobile World Congress – February 15, 2011 – HTC, a global leader in mobile innovation and design, today announced its first tablet, the HTC FlyerTM. HTC Flyer blends HTC’s trademark design language with an all-new HTC Sense user experience that has been reimagined for the tablets. Using an intuitive and innovative approach to tablets, HTC Flyer combines natural touch and pen interaction. HTC also announced HTC Watch, a new connected video service that will debut on HTC Flyer tablet, and will collaborate with OnLive, Inc. to launch the first cloud-based mobile gaming service on a tablet.

“Clearly, smartphones have transformed our lives but as we observed how people use smartphones, computers and other technologies, we saw an opportunity to create a tablet experience that is different, more personal and productive,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “We are progressing down a path as an industry when people will no longer be in a single device paradigm, but have multiple wireless devices for different needs; this is the direction we are moving.”

Encased in a sleek aluminum unibody, the HTC Flyer tablet exudes the iconic style and build quality HTC is known for. It is also ultra-light, weighing as little as a paperback book, and compact enough to fit in a jacket pocket only. With a seven-inch display, lightning fast 1.5Ghz processor and high-speed HSPA+ wireless capabilities, the HTC Flyer tablet is perfect for those who have been waiting for a tablet that is both compact and powerful.

HTC Sense for Tablet
HTC Sense revolutionized smartphones by placing the person at the center of the experience. HTC Flyer’s tablet-focused HTC Sense experience focuses on surprising and delighting people with its gorgeous 3D home screen. A unique carousel of widgets puts a user’s most important content and information at the visual center of the experience. The HTC Flyer tablet also offers uncompromised Web browsing with Flash 10 and HTML 5.

HTC Scribe Technology
Touch interaction lights up the HTC Flyer tablet experience, but it also offers a groundbreaking pen experience. With the new HTC Scribe Technology on the HTC Flyer tablet, people can rediscover the natural act of writing. HTC Scribe Technology introduces a wave of integrated digital ink innovations that make it easy and natural to take notes, sign contracts, draw pictures, or even write on a web page or photo.

HTC Scribe Technology on the HTC Flyer tablet transforms traditional note-taking into smart note-taking by integrating natural onscreen writing with thoughtful and integrated innovations. A feature called Timemark enables you to capture the audio of a meeting in line with your written notes, so tapping on a word in your notes instantly takes you to that exact place in time in the audio recording of the meeting. Notes are also integrated with the calendar so when there is an appointment reminder you are automatically prompted with an opportunity to begin a new note or in the case of recurring meetings, to continue where the last meeting left off. In an industry first, the HTC Flyer tablet also features built-in synchronization with Evernote, the world-leading notes application and service.

Streaming Mobile Movies with HTC Watch
The HTC Flyer tablet premieres HTC Watch, HTC’s new video download service. The HTC Watch service enables low-cost on-demand progressive downloading of hundreds of High-Definition movies from major studios. The intuitive, natural design of the HTC Watch service makes it easy to find the latest movie and video content, while advanced technology on the back-end enables instant playback over the HTC Flyer tablet’s high-speed wireless connection.

Mobile Cloud Gaming with OnLive
HTC takes mobile gaming to an entirely new level by being the first mobile device in the world to integrate OnLive Inc.’s revolutionary cloud-based gaming service. OnLive is leading in the home gaming market by letting people play top video games on their televisions and computers without the need to buy expensive gaming hardware or software. When integrated fully, the OnLive service will enable customers to pipe the OnLive service through the HTC Flyer tablet’s broadband wireless to their television sets, or let them play directly on the tablet. When integrated on the HTC Flyer tablet, people can play a variety of games, including hits like Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood™, NBA 2K11 and Lego Harry Potter™.

Availability
HTC Flyer will be available to customers globally during Q2 2011.

About HTC
HTC Corporation (HTC) is one of the fastest growing companies in the mobile phone industry. By putting people at the center of everything it does, HTC creates innovative smartphones that better serve the lives and needs of individuals. The company is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2498. For more information about HTC, please visitwww.htc.com.

Bell Canada will be launching the HTC HD7 on February 10th at a steep price of $599.99. The HD7 will sport a 4.3 inch LCD – just like the incredibly popular HD2. The rest of the specs are very much what you would expect from the HD line of phones, and the Windows Phone minimum spec sheet: 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera, dual LED flash, 720p video recording, GPS, WiFi, and 16GB of internal storage.

For those of you not on Bell’s network, but still longing for the HTC HD7 will be happy to know that Bell runs the same network as AT&T, Rogers, Fido, and Telus. You shouldn’t have much problem getting a HD7, unlocking it and then inserting your carriers SIM card.

The HD2 is one of my all time favorite devices. It had all the right stuff for it’s time. I’m looking forward to the HD7, and hoping it’s the right combination of goodness that we’ve been waiting to see from HTC.
