HTC Desire Becomes Officially Available from Telus

It should come as no surprise to regular MobileJaw readers that Telus was going to be launching the HTC Desire. Well, if you’ve been holding out waiting for the day Telus has stock and is ready to sell you the phone, then today is your lucky day!

What I find most interesting is the timing of this launch. It’s just 1 short week after launching the iPhone 4 and there’s no question that Canadians are going crazy over the iPhone – many stores are reporting people are still lining up before they open to grab whatever stock came in over night. So with such a big draw already available, why would you launch something else, regardless of how great it is? I would have expected the carriers to hold off on launching any other devices for at least 4 weeks.

Anyway, if you’re looking for the Desire, you can grab it from Telus for $450 without a contract. That’s a pretty great price for this phone. With a contract the price drops to $400, $350, and $80 for a 1, 2, and 3 year contract. You can check out all the details at the Telus website.

I was able to pick one up today. I was intending to get a video up of it this evening but things just haven’t gone my way. I now have a few minutes to do this post.

There have been two main points of speculation with this device, the screen and radio bands.

The bands are 850/1900 HSPA and quad band GSM. What this means is, you can talk pretty much anywhere in the world, but outside North America you will be surfing on EDGE speeds….kinda like riding a ten speed bike, but stuck in second or third gear…you’re getting there but just not as quick as you would like. ;)

Next is the screen. As most people probably already know the European version of the Desire had an AMOLED screen. Because of supply issues HTC switched to Super LCD screens. I can tell you that the screen looks great. It is very vibrant.

The S LCD screen is supposed to be very easy on power consumption. So far I get the feeling that may be true. I’ve only had it since this afternoon, and it’s been on the charger a couple of times for short charges. It started at about 50% charge and is now at 45% with only a few minutes on the charger, and I’ve used it a fair bit in that time. Too early to say for sure. Tomorrow should give me a better idea….I’ll let you all know.

Oh…if you are wondering, it is running 2.1 and hitting the OTA update comes up dry.
